Violence Is Awesome
March 4, 2010

I almost wanted to throw in a news article and say "This rant based on..." but I didn't. Let me throw the article in anyway, just so you can get an idea of what's got the wheels in my infinite godly mind spinning today.
ISU study proves conclusively that violent video game play makes more aggressive kids

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University Distinguished Professor of Psychology Craig Anderson has made much of his life's work studying how violent video game play affects youth behavior. And he says a new study he led, analyzing 130 research reports on more than 130,000 subjects worldwide, proves conclusively that exposure to violent video games makes more aggressive, less caring kids -- regardless of their age, sex or culture.

The study was published today in the March 2010 issue of the Psychological Bulletin, an American Psychological Association journal. It reports that exposure to violent video games is a causal risk factor for increased aggressive thoughts and behavior, and decreased empathy and prosocial behavior in youths.

"We can now say with utmost confidence that regardless of research method -- that is experimental, correlational, or longitudinal -- and regardless of the cultures tested in this study [East and West], you get the same effects," said Anderson, who is also director of Iowa State's Center for the Study of Violence. "And the effects are that exposure to violent video games increases the likelihood of aggressive behavior in both short-term and long-term contexts. Such exposure also increases aggressive thinking and aggressive affect, and decreases prosocial behavior."

The study was conducted by a team of eight researchers, including ISU psychology graduate students Edward Swing and Muniba Saleem; and Brad Bushman, a former Iowa State psychology professor who now is on the faculty at the University of Michigan. Also on the team were the top video game researchers from Japan - Akiko Shibuya from Keio University and Nobuko Ihori from Ochanomizu University - and Hannah Rothstein, a noted scholar on meta-analytic review from the City University of New York.

Meta-analytic procedure used in research

The team used meta-analytic procedures -- the statistical methods used to analyze and combine results from previous, related literature -- to test the effects of violent video game play on the behaviors, thoughts and feelings of the individuals, ranging from elementary school-aged children to college undergraduates.

The research also included new longitudinal data which provided further confirmation that playing violent video games is a causal risk factor for long-term harmful outcomes.

"These are not huge effects -- not on the order of joining a gang vs. not joining a gang," said Anderson. "But these effects are also not trivial in size. It is one risk factor for future aggression and other sort of negative outcomes. And it's a risk factor that's easy for an individual parent to deal with -- at least, easier than changing most other known risk factors for aggression and violence, such as poverty or one's genetic structure."

The analysis found that violent video game effects are significant in both Eastern and Western cultures, in males and females, and in all age groups. Although there are good theoretical reasons to expect the long-term harmful effects to be higher in younger, pre-teen youths, there was only weak evidence of such age effects.

Time to refocus the public policy debate

The researchers conclude that the study has important implications for public policy debates, including development and testing of potential intervention strategies designed to reduce the harmful effects of playing violent video games.

"From a public policy standpoint, it's time to get off the question of, 'Are there real and serious effects?' That's been answered and answered repeatedly," Anderson said. "It's now time to move on to a more constructive question like, 'How do we make it easier for parents -- within the limits of culture, society and law -- to provide a healthier childhood for their kids?'"

But Anderson knows it will take time for the creation and implementation of effective new policies. And until then, there is plenty parents can do to protect their kids at home.

"Just like your child's diet and the foods you have available for them to eat in the house, you should be able to control the content of the video games they have available to play in your home," he said. "And you should be able to explain to them why certain kinds of games are not allowed in the house -- conveying your own values. You should convey the message that one should always be looking for more constructive solutions to disagreements and conflict."

Anderson says the new study may be his last meta-analysis on violent video games because of its definitive findings. Largely because of his extensive work on violent video game effects, Anderson was chosen as one of the three 2010 American Psychological Association Distinguished Scientist Lecturers. He will give a lecture at October's New England Psychological Association (NEPA) meeting in Colchester, Vt.

And my immediate reaction to this is: "So fucking what?"

See, I was going to base the rant on that article and bitch about kids and video games and the monumentous pile of horseshit surrounding the whole subject. But then it occurred to me that this isn't just a "kids and games" thing. No, this is a small symptom of a much larger issue in society.

The issue being, of course, that we have gotten it into our sick twisted little brains that violence is somehow a BAD thing. It's a part of the continued and unrelenting pussification of our culture. Little boys are told not to "play too rough" and punished if they make a gun shape with their finger and say "bang, you're dead!" All because our shitty fucking pansy ass generation of helicopter soccer moms and metrosexual dads want to continue their faggoty little social experiment to create a more sensitive and caring child who doesn't kick puppies and respects the feelings of trees and holds a funeral for the bug he accidentally stepped on. --

== TIME OUT! Guys, I just ate the very last Tagalong. Now I have to wait a whole 'nother year for a fucking girl scout to come sell me more. Please respect my feelings about this and let's all give thanks to Jesus for making the little girls who baked those cookies.... wait, I mean for making the mexicans who sneak into the country illegally to work at the Keebler-owned bakeries where the cookies are made. Yeah. Now back to the rant. ==

== P.S. I was kidding about the Jesus thing, fuck that cunt. HAHA, KATRINA, YOU LIKE THAT? SUCK A DICK. ==

Anyway...

What we have going on in society today is 180 degrees COUNTER to what we've evolved to be! Violence is bad? No, no, you sissy little bean-counter, violence is why your ass is HERE. If your ancestors hadn't been more violence than other primative humans, you wouldn't be around, cuz the other assholes would've kicked your great(x500) granddaddy's ass, taken his bitch, fucked her, and that would be the end of your family line, circa 100,000 BCE, shitface!

Violence is a survival skill. It's built into us and ever other living thing on the planet. Does a lion stand there and try to convince a goddamn zebra to hop into his mouth? NO! He takes that shit by force, cuz if he didn't, he'd be dead. Instead, he fucks that zebra's world up, fills up his motherfuckin' tummy, and smiles about it. All so that 100,000 years from now, his descendants can drink bottled water and fucking whine about their kids being exposed to too much simulated violence!

FUCK!

"lol no galen dats stupid cuz we dont have to fight 4 survival N-E-MOAR!"

You ever been mugged? Car-jacked? Gotten into a fight (besides getting your ass kicked in school, you little douche)? Try sticking your head out into the goddamn real world one of these days, assface. It's a violent place out there. Your kids aren't going to survive in it by faking a panic attack, pretending to puke, or whatever other nancy-boy shit they do to get out of trouble with Mrs. Slobnob, the hoity-toity piano teacher they go to every Thursday. Fucking sissy.

Chances are, you have used violence at some point in your life to a positive benefit to yourself. Even if you haven't (besides you're a reclusive shut-in), you can think of at least one example in which violence was a force for good. So as far as the "kids and video games" thing is concerned, I say FUCKING GREAT! I'm GLAD we have things in this world that can safely teach kids to get in touch with their savage side. I'm MOTHERFUCKING THANKFUL that we still have means for our kids to safely learn that sometimes you just gotta slice through a crowd of people with a fucking chainsaw or mow them down with an AK-47 if you want results!

Pictured: Important life lesson

"But Galen, don't you get it? We KNOW the world is a violent place; we're trying to CHANGE that by raising a generation of kids who won't be that way!"

Which would be great except for the small but inescapable problem of millions of years of fucking evolution that isn't going to be undone by you breast-feeding hippy bullshit to your 12yo.

Look, you wanna live by the philosophy that violence is a horrible ugly thing and that's fine. Taking a shit is a horrible ugly thing too, but if you didn't do it sometimes, you'd fucking die, you scrotum-biting little cum bucket! Life is not roses and fucking sweet peaches, you asstard and you'll never make it that way.

Human beings have a violent nature. MOST humans control it perfectly well and hold it at a reasonable level. Then there are the assholes who will punch you over a parking space or shoot you for your iPod. They're fucking horrible, I agree. Now what you need to understand is that you and your sissy kids are the other extreme end of the violence spectrum and YOU'RE JUST AS DETRIMENTAL TO SOCIETY as the violent assholes!

Violence is awesome, when you need it. And you DO need it! You think the gangs and douchebags are bad now? What the fuck do you think they'd be like if we didn't have people in this world to fucking stand up to them? How bad do you think they'd be if everybody fucking pussed out like you? We have cops (who need to be violent as part of their job) to protect us from them. We have soldiers (who need to be violent as part of their job) to protect us from bigger assholes.

Let's try this another way. Picture the scene. You've been pulled into a dark alley, beaten up, your pants ripped down and you're bent over. Some dude is about to violently rape you. Suddenly, out of the shadows walks an innocent passerby. Pop quiz, motherfucker, who would you rather the passerby turn out to be?

A) Lord Galen, carrying a big fucking stick
B) A fucking pacifist
C) Neither, cuz you'd rather get beaten and raped than have anyone use violence to save you.

Let's just be honest, first off. You didn't choose C. Even if you did choose C, you WOULDN'T if you really were in that situation. Let's be a little more honest now. You didn't choose B either. Yeah, I mean, your fruity little stupid ass might say you did cuz the pacifist could totally call the cops or something (like the rapist wouldn't just stab him on the spot), but no, you would not want that, not really. You fucking chose A. You chose "A" because you know that violence is goddamn awesome as all fucking shit when you need it. If you're about to get raped in your ass and suddenly saw me walk out of the shadows behind your attacker and swing a blunt object, you'd be so thankful that you'd just stay in the same position to offer up your asshole as a token of your appreciation.

Violence. Is. AWESOME.

You know it, I know it, everybody fucking knows it. Now it's time to stop pretending that we think violence is horrible. No, we all honestly think that unneccesary violence is horrible. We DON'T think that violence, in general, is horrible. We LOVE violence. And so do you. You just want to be some great social champion and look like the biggest prick liberal hippy asshat at your next party, so you do stupid things like trying to ban violent video games or saying "Galen, don't teach your kids to beat up the retarded children, that's not nice!" Survival of the fittest, you cunt sniffers.

In closing (and in all seriousness), violence is a neccesary part of human development. We all learned it and keeping your kids from learning it is stunting their growth as people. You might as well just tell them to go climb in a trash can when they get to high school, cuz the other kids are gonna put 'em there. Normally violent people instinctively try to weed out (or toughen up) the weaklings in the herd.

Let's go kill something now! FUCK YEAH, VIOLENCE!!!
RRAAAAWWWWWWRRRRR!!!!!

Bring the violence
It's significant
To the life
If you've ever known anyone
Bring the violence
It's significant
To the life
Can you feel it?

How do you sleep
When you live with your lies
Out of your mouth
Up from your mind
That kind of thinking
Starts a chain reaction
You are a timebomb ticking away
You need to release
What you're feeling inside
Let out the beast
That you're trying to hide
Step right up and be a part of the action
Get your game face on
Because it's time to play
You're pushing and fighting your way
You're ripping it up

Bring the violence
It's significant
To the life
If you've ever known anyone
Bring the violence
It's significant
To the life
Can you feel it? (x2)

How do you live without playing the game
Sit on the side and expect to keep sane
Step right up and be a part of the action
Come get a piece of it before it's too late
Take a look around
You can't deny what you see
We're living in a violent society
Well my brother let me show you a better way
So get your game face on because it's time to play
You're pushing and fighting your way you're ripping it up

Bring the violence
It's significant
To the life
If you've ever known anyone
Bring the violence
It's significant
To the life
Can you feel it? (x2)

Tell me what am I supposed to be
Another goddamn drone
Tell me what am I supposed to be
Should I leave it on the inside
Tell me what am I supposed to be
Another goddamn drone
Tell me what am I supposed to be
Should I get ready to play
You're pushing and fighting your way
You're ripping it up

Bring the violence
It's significant
To the life
If you've ever known anyone
Bring the violence
It's significant
To the life
Can you feel it? (x2)
